Mass Updating Tags for Contacts

Using the import/export tool to update tags

Updated over a week ago

If you have a number of existing contacts that you wish to tag, you can do so using the Import & export tool.

This will involve the following steps:

NOTE: Tags need to exist before adding via an import. Add the tag in Method before importing this list.

Export your Contacts

First, you will need to export your current contacts to an CSV file.

  1. Click your preferences icon in the upper right and select Integrations.

  2. Select Export Settings.

  3. Select the Contacts table.

  4. Click Deselect all fields because we will only need four.

  5. From the field list, select the following:

    • Entity

    • Name

    • RecordID

    • Taglist

  6. Click the Export. This will download a file called Contacts_export.csv .

Update your Contacts file with Tags

With the file you downloaded above from the Import/Export tool, you can update the Taglist column to add in tags.

Below is an example .csv file loaded into Google docs. The TagList column holds the tags.

There are a few things to keep in mind

  • Tags are separated by commas.

  • If you have spaces in your tags, replace it with an underscore "_".

  • The tag should exist in Method before adding. Add the tag to Method before importing this list.

  • Any contact you don't need to update, you can remove from this list.

Once you are finished adding tags, export the file as a new .csv file and go to the next section.

Update Contacts in Method with New Tags

You should now be ready to update the data back into Method. The import flow will mostly follow the Importing a File into Method article, however, there are minor changes.

  1. Click your profile icon in the upper right and choose Integrations.

  2. Select Import & Export.

  3. Select Other for the type of data you wish to import.

  4. For Select an import method, upload your import file and make sure you select the Contacts table.

  5. For What are you looking to do, make sure you choose Update records.

  6. By default, the RecordID column in the import file should be mapped to the RecordID field in the table.

  7. Continue with the import from here.

Congratulations! Your contacts will now be updated with new tags!

Note: If you do not see your tags update, force-refresh your browser's cache.
